Where to get a Driving Record

You can get a copy of your New York driving record directly from the Department of Motor Vehicles. The DMV currently offers you the ability to order your driving record in several different ways. No matter what method you choose to order your driving record, there is a $10 “search fee.” The search fee is non-refundable, so if you don’t give the DMV all of the information they need to find your record, the search will fail and you’ll have to pay the fee again.

Below you will find a list of the different ways you can use to get your New York driving record:

  • Online: You can order your record online here, as long as your address is current with the DMV. If it isn’t, you’ll need to change it first, or someone else will end up with your driving record. After you place your order, the DMV will mail your driving record to you in approximately 2 weeks. The online ordering service accepts credit card payments only.
  • Over the phone: Once again, you’ll need to have a credit card to pay the $10 search fee. When ordering over the phone, you’ll also have to pay an additional $5 processing fee. Of course, you’ll have to verify some of the information off of your driver’s license, so make sure you have it handy when you call. Here are the numbers to call to request your New York driving record: If you are calling from area codes 315, 518, 585, 607, or 716 you’ll dial 1-800-225-5368. If you are calling from a different area code, it’s 1-518-473-5595.
  • Through the mail: To order a copy of your New York driving record by mail, you’ll need to fill out form MV-15, available online here. You’ll also need to include a copy of your identification so that the DMV can ensure you are authorized to request the record. Make sure to include a check or money order for the $10 fee. Don’t send cash. Again, it will take about 2 weeks to receive your record. Mail your form to the following address:

MV-15 Processing
NYS Department of Motor Vehicles
6 Empire State Plaza
Albany NY 12228

  • In Person: You can go to any local DMV office to get a copy of your New York driving record. You’ll need your ID, and you’ll still have to pay the $10 search fee. Click here to find your nearest DMV office.

You can also request a copy of your driving report whenever you renew your driver’s license online or through the mail. Simply check the box on the renewal form to indicate that you want a copy of your New York driving record, and include the $10 processing fee.
