What To Do If You Got a New York Speeding Ticket

They caught you! Now what? If you get a speeding ticket, the first thing to do is to deal with the police officer writing the ticket. You should speak to the officer calmly but politely. Now is not the time to argue, even if you don't believe you were speeding. Go ahead and sign the ticket-it's not an admission of guilt, just a confirmation that you received the ticket and will show up in court. Then, take a deep breath and let your heart rate come back down to normal. Drive away slowly and cautiously, and when you get home you can decide how to proceed.

Remember, if you get a New York speeding ticket you have 3 options: accept guilt and pay the fine, try to get the charge reduced, or plead innocent and try to beat the ticket. If you decide to pay the fine through the mail, understand that the conviction will go on your record and you will have points added to your license. If you decide not to fight the ticket, your insurance rates will go up. However, if you take a New York defensive driving class, such as the one we offer here at Driving University, you will receive a 10% discount on your auto insurance, which may help offset the additional charges for having a ticket on your record.
